Mosquitoes are common insects throughout most of the world. Their requirement for a blood meal for egg development makes them potential vectors of disease. Mosquitos do carry and transmit disease organisms to humans and animals.

Mosquito Identification

Very slender flies with an elongate piercing mouth-parts. Legs are long and antennae covered with long soft hair in the females. Wings are fringed with scales along the posterior margins and veins.

Mosquito Habitat

Only female mosquitoes have the mouth parts necessary for sucking blood. When biting with their proboscis, they stab two tubes into the skin: one to inject an enzyme that inhibits blood clotting; the other to suck blood into their bodies. They use the blood not for their own nourishment but as a source of protein for their eggs. For food, both males and females eat nectar and other plant sugars.

Mosquito Life Cycle

The mosquito goes through four separate and distinct stages of its life cycle: Egg, Larva, Pupa, and Adult. The first three stages occur in water, but the adult is an active flying insect. An entire life cycle takes about 10-14 days. Only the female mosquito bites and feeds on the blood of humans or other animals. Some mosquito female can lay up to 200 eggs at one time.

Mosquito Prevention

Find and remove any puddles of water or standing water around your home to reduce breeding sites. Puncture unusable tires in the yard to prevent pools of water from forming inside them. Wipe out your bird-bath every few days. Maintain your swimming pool to prevent mosquito breeding. Keep grass and shrubs trimmed short. Keep windows and door screens in good working order. Use mosquito netting over infant carriers when outdoors, especially at dusk. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants while outdoors, and consider staying indoors early in the morning and evening when mosquitoes are most active.
