Pests can be attracted to a residence for a number of reasons. In some cases it's because of the local environment - such as how close the home is to woods. In other cases it might be because of refuse or trash near the home - garbage cans and spilled food can be big attractors of insects and rodents. But did you know that your plumbing system can also attract pests if not properly maintained? Damaged or poorly installed plumbing fixtures can lead to spilled water and mold, which can seem like flashing neon signs to the local pest population. Read on to learn how to check your home's plumbing and about what to look out for.

Leaky pipes

Pests will usually enter a home for one of two reasons: food supply or water supply. Like other animals, insects and rodents are always on the lookout for their next meal or the next drink of water. In the summer months, it is usually water they're after. If the weather has been dry, insects will turn to man made water solutions. If the weather has been wet, groundwater might have seeped into the foundation of your home, bringing the bugs with it. According to Purdue University, pools, kitchens and bathrooms are prime targets for thirsty pests. Leaky pipes and faucets are easy to spot. If you've noticed ants, spiders or centipedes in your home, check all of your pipes for leaks. That means going under all the sinks, checking shower heads and looking around the main water supply in your home. You should also check any outdoor spouts you might have. Seal any leaks you find or call a professional if you notice large cracks.

According to Texas A&M University, some insects, like beetles, actually feed on mold and mildew. Improperly installed plumbing or out-of-date fixtures might lead to moisture build up, even if they are not actively leaking. Mold is its own health hazard, especially for those with asthma or allergies, so it should be cleaned up as soon as you spot it. If you're plumbing is fine, but you're still finding mold buildup, consider using a dehumidifier to remove some of the moisture from the air.

Standing water, mold and humidity are all things that bugs love, so do everything you can to keep them out of your home! Doing so will be a major step in limiting insect populations around your house.
